The origin of Dragon Boat Festival is closely related to the great poet Qu Yuan in the Warring States Period. Qu Yuan was a patriotic poet who wrote a lot of works to show his care and devotion to his country. After he was exiled by the king, he chose to drown himself in the river. The locals paddled on their boats and banged drums, gongs and everything they could find to scare away anything that might harm Qu Yuan.
To look back on his death on the fifth day on the fifth lunar month, we celebrate Dragon Boat Festival in various ways. The most well-known celebration is represented by energetic and colorful dragon boat races, where paddlers race in long narrow boats accompanied by the beat of the drum down to the finish line. Also, we eat Zongzi which is a pyramid-shaped glutinous rice dumpling wrapped in reed leaves, it is the specialty eaten on that day.
