We start the day by browsing news and updates on the laptop, go on to spend our working day glued to the computer screen and often end our evening with a nice movie and  bag of chips.

The truth is, we do spend a lot of time in front of the screen. And as convenient as it may be, it does put a bug strain on our eyes.

So here are a few ideas on how to give your eye the long-needed break.

 Exercise One: Palming.

Rub your palms together to create heat. Next, press your palms against your eyes. Let the heat warm and relax your eye for a few minutes.

Exercise Two: Blinking.

A lack of blinking is one of the reasons for computer-induced eyestrain, as it dries your eyes and causes scratchiness.  Every hour, give yourself a break from staring relentlessly at the screen and blink 20 times.

 Exercise Three: Eye-rolling Massage.

No, we do not mean that rolling your eye at an overly-demanding customer is actually good for your eyes. This is a different exercise, very efficient and simple: just close your eyes and use your hands to massage them (roll) in circular motion. This helps to avoid dryness and eases the strain on the muscles.

Keep up doing these three exercises daily and in less than a week you will have a clear strain-free vision for your business.

 

Recent trends show that more and more companies choose to block social media in the workplace. The general idea behind making the social media fruit forbidden is that it negatively affects productivity. But is it really so?

The truth is, blocking social media is not an easy task. Yes, you can do that using various software programmes. But for every blocking programme, four more pop up that help get around the block. This is just how it works. Cell phones, laptops and tablets also make it easier to get around social media restrictions. And actually, employees end up spending more time figuring out how to surpass the imposed limitations, than they actually would spend checking the updates in their social media channels.

Secondly, productivity.  It is not a measure of time, as most people would think, but rather a measure of output. Simply speaking, if Tom is unproductive because he keeps watching funny videos on YouTube, there is very little chance he will be become a workaholic when the media is blocked. Probably, he will just find another way to entertain himself.

One more thing about productivity . Think about how much time your employees spend checking  work emails at home, answering work-related Skype messages or late international calls? Is it really fair then to deny them any forms of personal communication they may miss out on at work?

So where is the golden middle?

And speaking the language is often a formidable advantage to making it big.

So what are the top business languages of today (and hopefully the future)?

Here’s our take on it:

5. Portuguese

Brazil’s influence on the global economic arena has been growing in the past years. It also helps that the country boasts a population of over 200 million. Portuguese is also spoken on Portugal (naturally),  Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, East Timor, Macau and a number of communities in Spain, France and Luxembourg.

4. Russian

Despite a number of economic and political issues, Russia is a strong international player. Moscow holds the first place in the worlds when it comes to the number of billionaires and the country is rich in natural resources, which offers great opportunities for investment.

The language is very different from English and not easy to learn. But that’s a good thing! The fewer people speak it, the more in demand you’ll be after mastering it.

3. Spanish

The US alone has over 35 million Spanish speakers and there are over 425 million Spanish speakers worldwide. It is considered relatively easy for English speakers and you will not have problems finding materials or a tutor in any corner  of the world.

Arabic is the primary language of some of the world’s up-and-coming nations, wealth centers, and frontier markets.

Areas like Dubai and Abu Dhabi have become the world’s emerging financial centres but wealthy Middle Easterners will also look to diversify their wealth outside of the region, creating opportunities for those who speak their language to tap into lucrative business deals

True, a great number of Chinese citizens are going to great lengths to improve their English, but currently barely ten million of Chinese speak good English.
