Tax Saving Tip #4: Hong Kong Surplus Waiver

ATTENTION BUSINESS OWNER: Hong Kong’s government budget has consistently saved you money. You don’t believe me? Well, Hong Kong has a tax-friendly law that particularly benefits SME’s. When Hong Kong runs a government budget surplus (brings in more money than they spend) part of your tax is waived. And the waiver is no laughable amount; it is 75 percent of your taxes up to HK$20,000.

Let’s look at an example. If your limited company turns a profit of HK$100,000 then normally the taxes your business would be HK$100,000*16.5%= HK$16,500.  But due to a surplus that year 75% of the tax is waived, thus your actual taxes due would only be HK$16,500*25%= HK$4,125.

Sounds too good to be true? It gets even better because you can expect a government budget surplus regularly. In fact, the Hong Kong government has not run a budget deficit in fourteen years. Further, the government reserves have steadily increased to over three trillion dollars. The tax waiver in Hong Kong will be sure to save you and your company a nice lump of money each year!

At Centre O, we can handle your accounting & auditing. Let’s see if you can also benefit from the Hong Kong tax waiver. For further details, please contact us at sales@centreo.hk.

Tax Saving Tip #3: No Taxes on Investments

After years of intelligent and lucrative investing, you decide it is time to take your earnings out of your portfolio. But before that money reaches your pocket, you are disappointed to find that a huge slice of your would-be earnings has been gobbled up by various taxes. You realize your investment was hardly worth what you thought it was.

This story is probably a familiar one. Although, this story in Hong Kong does not exist! Hong Kong does not tax your capital gains. The earnings you achieve from selling an investment after it has increased in value is not taxed in Hong Kong. Moreover, dividends from Hong Kong companies- earnings paid out to shareholders-  are also not taxed.

Thanks to these tax-free laws, your portfolio in Hong Kong could be worth a lot more! At Centre O, we can act as your tax representative to determine your company profit tax. Contact us at sales@centreo.hk for more details.

Tax Saving Tip #2: Hong Kong Rent Write-Off

Another tax saving tip for your business!

We all know one thing for certain in Hong Kong – rent is expensive. Really really expensive. For many, Hong Kong rent can eat up most of their monthly paycheck. Luckily, Hong Kong has a policy providing relief for entrepreneurs here.

In Hong Kong, the directors of a company can use their rent expense to deduct from their taxable business income. What does this all mean? Business taxes, called Profits Tax in Hong Kong, take a portion of yearly profits. Your profit is calculated by taking revenue for the year and subtracting expenses the company incurred. Hong Kong very uniquely allows the directors’ rent to be deducted as a business expense, thus making the profit the government can tax smaller. Since rent is so high, this allowance can amount to thousands of dollars in tax savings.

So, why does the government have this rule? Hong Kong policymakers reason that in order to run a business in Hong Kong, you are going to have to live and pay rent somewhere to run that business. Sadly, few other countries follow this reasoning.

Hopefully, paying rent in Hong Kong is now a little less painful! At Centre O, we can arrange the yearly accounting & auditing for you. Contact us at sales@centreo.hk for more details.

Tax Saving Tip #1: Hong Kong “Carryforward”

Who likes paying taxes? Nobody. Fortunately, Hong Kong has one of the lowest corporate tax rates in the world. What’s more, there are several unique ways you can save on your company’s tax bill.

Being wildly profitable in the first few years of business is often far-fetched with getting your name out there and all the startup costs. Even some of the most successful businesses like FedEx, Amazon, and Uber had the same story. To help with that, Hong Kong has laws that use past losses to help you pay less in taxes in the future.

This idea is called carryforward. Carryforward means if your business lost money in the past, that amount can be used to lower your profits tax in the future. For example, if your business earned a profit of HK$50,000 the second year of operation, but your business lost HK$50,000 in your first year, then your business won’t pay a dollar in taxes. Thanks to carryforward, previous losses can be deducted from future profits. In this scenario, your taxable profit is zero (50k current profit – 50k past losses), and so you’ll pay nothing in taxes.

Many other countries also have carryforward policies, but what makes Hong Kong’s policy unique is no restrictions on the time or amount. Meaning, no matter how many years it is before you turn profitable nor the dollar figure of the losses accumulated is restricted to carryforward in Hong Kong. The same can’t be said for countries like the Netherlands, Spain, the US, France and many many more. So, when your business does become wildly profitable in Hong Kong, enjoy some extra cash!

Centre O would be happy to act as your tax representative and make you benefit from this rule! Contact us at sales@centreo.hk for more details.
